OK if you own either a FUZE or HTC Touch Pro you already know the pain accidental presses of the PTT button that serves no purpose to 99% of the users experience. I wanted to make it something useful. I chose to remap the button to do two things from several posts on the internet mainly over at XDA-Developers and put it together in a quick how to guide so I won’t forget how to do it when I do this little mod for others. What I mapped the PTT button for was both a short and long press. I mapped the short press to the Task Manager so I can quickly switch between open applications or shut them down and the long press for Wireless Manager so I can quickly toggle my Bluetooth,WiFi, & Phone on and off. I opted not to map this to the Camera since I have another way how to do that. However for now it seems to work for me. Here is how I did it.

ptt5

I used my favorite registry editor from my good friend Philippe Majerus called PHM Registry Editor and did a quick find for PTT.

ptt4

It found a directory under HKLM/Services/PTT so I looked it over and it from what I found over at XDA Developers this was the culprit and deleted it from the registry as well as the second find of PTT in HKCU\Software\HTC\PTT. In order to save these changes a soft reset will be needed, but before you do we are going to need to do a few things first.

Head to the Windows directory and either delete the current PTT directory or rename it to PTT2, PTTBAK, or whatever and create a new PTT folder.

ptt6

All I did was create a short-cut by copying the program I wished to launch and pasting it as a shortcut in the PTT directory.

task manager wireless manager ptt7

The one I wanted to be a short press (Task Manager) I renamed it as short_PTT.lnk and the one with the long press aka hold (in my case Wireless Manager)was renamed to long_PTT.lnk. If you are just using the WM file explorer you won’t see the .lnk extension, but rather when you create the shortcut it will usually put the text shortcut in the name. Al you have to do is copy the programs shown in the pictures above located in the Windows directory, paste them as a shortcut and then rename them accordingly. If you want the more detailed Communication Manager it can be found under Windows->Applications->Comm Manager.

ptt2

Note according to the folks at XDA-Developers changing the PTT like in previous HTC devices will disable the function of PTT until a hard reset to factory defaults is performed. Also you may notice another long shortcut in there. Check out my other FUZE/TouchPro remapping tip on how I launch the Camera Application. :)
