Windows 7 Shortcut Keys

When I installed Windows 7 I noticed a few shortcut keys did a few different things than I was used to. I found that Brandon Paddock (I have known Brandon before he worked with Microsoft - we were both MSN Search Champs back in the day and he is a huge Windows Mobile fan) had put together a pretty good list here that cleared a few things up. Most of it has to do with the new features and UX that Windows 7 has from Windows Vista.

Changing Exchange Mail Settings in Vista 64

I have several email addresses for work, consulting and my private life and recently had to switch Exchange email service providers for one of my clients. On my Windows Vista 64 bit system, I could not find the Mail settings that I could on my Vista 32-bit computers to add the exchange account. Normally it was found in Classic View of the Control Panel as a simple Mail icon and I could add/edit my changes from there. Unfortunately Windows Vista 64 doesn’t have such an icon. Well actually it does, it’s just hidden.

Start Control panel, Start-> Control Panel. Notice the Mail icon is missing.

Windows 7 SKUs Explained

Brandon LeBlanc has put together a great article together over at the Windows Team Blog explaining the differences in the SKUS for Windows 7, that many have said that” its the same as Windows Vista” and have caused many to think they will be having systems not being able to run from the same misunderstanding with the Windows Certified, that got many people upset when purchasing a new PC, but didn’t bother to research their purchase and how it would run Vista. Its like buying a car - “What do you mean I can’t convert my new car to Bio Diesel, my neighbor can do it with his car?!!!” is shock to people that don’t research what they are buying.

Brandon covers the decision process behind the SKUs as well as a better upgrade path for those who want to come in at a lower price point, but not have the install problems they had in the past since the Windows 7 build is cut from the same bits. I only hope that someone can do an upgrade in place with a purchased upgrade aka solid media DVD as well as the online only option of the Windows Vista upgrade in place, which just blew. I had a new Windows Vista PC with Windows Vista Business on it that I couldn’t upgrade in place to Windows Ultimate even thought I had purchased Windows Ultimate legitimately from the Microsoft store. I had to wipe the whole install and start from scratch and reinstall all my programs and configure everything again. Hopefully this too will be resolved.

Today, I wanted to take a closer look at the Windows 7 SKUs since there has been some discussion about them for the last couple of days. By the end of this post, I want you to know exactly which edition of Windows 7 is right for you and help you understand how we approached addressing the large amount of feedback we received.

Microsoft has? created a SKU line-up for Windows 7,? where each SKU is a superset of the previous SKU. This means that each higher edition SKU will have every feature lower edition SKUs have with a focus on two primary editions of Windows 7: Windows 7 Home Premium and Windows 7 Professional.

We will continue to offer a few targeted SKUs for customers with specialized needs: for price-sensitive customers with small notebook PCs, some OEMs will offer Windows 7 Starter. For customers in emerging markets, we will make Windows 7 Home Basic available. Businesses have two recommended choices: Windows 7 Professional and Windows 7 Enterprise. Windows 7 Professional is recommended for small businesses and Windows 7 Enterprise is recommended for mid- and large-sized businesses that have a Software Assurance Agreement with Microsoft.

How do you know what version of Internet Explorer Mobile you are running?

I was recently emailed a question asking how someone could find out what version of Windows Mobile Internet Explorer Mobile they are running on their device.

It’s pretty simple all you have to do in the address line type in about:version and a page will come up with the version you are running!

ReMap the FUZE / HTC Pro PTT Button

OK if you own either a FUZE or HTC Touch Pro you already know the pain accidental presses of the PTT button that serves no purpose to 99% of the users experience. I wanted to make it something useful. I chose to remap the button to do two things from several posts on the internet mainly over at XDA-Developers and put it together in a quick how to guide so I won’t forget how to do it when I do this little mod for others. What I mapped the PTT button for was both a short and long press. I mapped the short press to the Task Manager so I can quickly switch between open applications or shut them down and the long press for Wireless Manager so I can quickly toggle my Bluetooth,WiFi, & Phone on and off. I opted not to map this to the Camera since I have another way how to do that. However for now it seems to work for me. Here is how I did it.

I used my favorite registry editor from my good friend Philippe Majerus called PHM Registry Editor and did a quick find for PTT.

ReMap the FUZE/HTC Pro Power Long Press button

One of the things the FUZE/HTC Pro is lacking is enough dedicated buttons to quickly launch the applications you want. Yeah, you can turn the device on(either by pressing the power button, sliding open the keyboard or pulling out the stylus), press the home key(while in portrait) and slide the Touch Flo 3D ribbon until you get to the camera icon and then press the small camera icon to start up the camera that’s easy right?

Well I don’t think so. I just want to turn it on and press one button and be able to take pictures. You could map the PTT button to do this either with a short press or a long press. I prefer to be a bit lazier and mapped the long press of the power button to launch the camera.
