If you ever ran into the problem where you tried to run a command from the command prompt line and it errored out saying you didn’t have the correct security access even though you are the administrator. I found this out this weekend configuring some new Access Points in our house and I wanted to jump onto our dedicated 802.11n Access Point and need a new IP address since it was a different SSID and DNS. I tried going into ipconfig to release and renew and it wouldn’t allow me.

So I wanted to try something to see if I could elevate this. I remember seeing when I right clicked on icons I had the option to run as Administrator.

Typing cmd into the Start/Run pulled up cmd with a quick right click I had the option to “Run as administrator”. If you have UAC enabled you will be prompted to run it as administrator to really make sure you want to make the changes and run the command prompt with full administrative powers. Of course you do or you wouldn’t be reading this.

Now you are running an elevated command prompt as Administrator!
